The Nervous System design studio is taking us into the future.
Started in 2007, Nervous System design studio has pioneered the application of new technologies in design. Led by co-founders Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg, this studio combines art, science and technology. Their pieces are interdisciplinary hybrids that are one step ahead of the game. As Jessica holds degrees in architecture and biology and Jesse majored in mathematics, it’s this mix of knowledge and interests that shapes their work.
I am not very good at understanding, let alone describing, how their process creative goes. This is how they explain it: ” We create using a novel process that employs computer simulation to generate designs and digital fabrication to realize products. Drawing inspiration from natural phenomena, we write computer programs based on processes and patterns found in nature. We use those programs to create unique and affordable art, jewellery, and housewares.”
If that wasn’t enough to make you understand let’s add this: “Our work at Nervous System combines scientific research, computer graphics, mathematics, and digital fabrication to explore a new paradigm of product design and manufacture. Instead of designing objects, we craft computational systems that result in a myriad of distinct creations. These forms are realized using computer-controlled manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC routing.”
I don’t quite understand the exact way in which Nervous System design studio creates. Still, I can certainly say that I love their designs. I know when I love someone’s story and I really enjoyed discovering theirs. Using new technology to create exciting and beautiful objects makes their products unique. Did I also mention I think they’re very pretty?
