We love art here at TSD, but I recently realised it’s not that often that I see modern day sculptures and connect to them. You know, sometimes contemporary art can feel a bit weird or not very approachable. That’s not the case with British artist Anna Gillespie, whose work intrigues me but somehow makes me feel peaceful at the same time.
Anna studied many different subjects and had a lot of interesting experiences before deciding to dedicate her life to art. She spent years travelling and working for non-profit organisations, lived in Italy and worked as a studio assistant to sculptor Nigel Konstam and she participated in various exhibitions. Maybe it’s the diversity of her background that translates into her need to work with different materials and mixed media. Often incorporating elements of nature, Anna connects us to Mother Earth by creating unique pieces made from unexpected material and shaped like human silhouettes. It was these sculptures that made me fall in love with her work. I recommend visiting her website and Facebook page for more information and exhibition details.
