Internet is a magical place that lets you run into many talented people. One of them is Aleksandar, a fashion illustrator from Serbia that is the creative force behind Alex Acid Illustrations. He shared a piece of his world with us, talking about his work, creative process and what he does to relax. Let’s explore his illustrated world of fashion and pop culture.
Introduce yourself to our readers:
Hi guys. My name is Aleksandar aka Alex and I’m behind the Alex Acid Illustrations page where I upload my work and illustrations inspired by fashion and pop culture.
Why illustrations and if not them, then what?
I grew up in family that introduced me to the magic of art from an early age. I became interested in fashion in high school, so my drawings evolved into fashion illustration. I never really decided that that’s what I will be doing; illustrations came into my life quite spontaneously and I’m glad because of that. If it wasn’t for it, I would definitely explore photography and design of interiors and furniture.
What inspires you?
It may sound as a cliché, but I find inspiration in everything that surrounds me and that attracts my attention. It can be a detail from a collection or an editorial, a movie, a song, or even someone I saw passing on the street.
Moment in your career you’re most proud of?
I think I’m equally proud of every success I made in my illustrating career, because it all started spontaneously and I didn’t expect any of it. I am glad that there are people that love and follow my work. There were some moments when I was punching myself, thinking if all of it was real, seeing Gwen Stefani and Bryan Boy share my work on their Twitter profiles, as well as DKNY brand and Australian blogger Rachel Tee Tyler. I am also very proud of becoming a collaborator to one of the best fashion magazines in Serbia.
What’s the biggest struggle you faced in life as an artist and how did you overcome it?
The biggest disappointment was realising how little appreciation people have for other people’s efforts and work. I was sort expecting it, because that was always happening and it always will, as I don’t think we can change it. You just need to learn to stand behind your work and not back down. When I was younger I let it pass easily, until I started thinking about my goals and the direction which I wanted to take. We must set goals for ourselves, or we’ll end up taking a road where we can easily get lost.
What kind of role does music play in your life/creative process, and what is on your playlist right now?
My playlist depends on the mood in which I am that day. I like different genres, and each one inspires me in its own way. While working, I like to play indie and alternative music like Lykke Li, Florence + the Machine, The Neighbourhood. I also enjoy playlists from YouTube channel called Majestic Casual.
With which brand/magazine is it your dream to collaborate?
I have big desire to collaborate with Kaltblut, Dazed and Confused, I-D and Decoy Magazine that is one of my favourite because it publishes work from super talented illustrators from all around the world. I hope to get my work on their pages one day as well.
If you could have any superpower, which would you choose and why?
As a big fan of Marvel comics I always had a problem deciding on just one power. Controlling the weather, manipulating thoughts or cloning myself that would help me get everything done on time. It’s hard to pick when they all sound cool.
What do you do to relax?
My place for relaxing is on the floor, with headphones on and some chill music playing. I also like watching a good movie, and a bottle of wine is also welcomed.
What person dead or alive would you like to have dinner with?
I would rather went partying with Olivier Rousteing, Carine Roitfeld, Kanye West, Riccardo Tisci and Rihanna. That would be an unforgettable night.
Choose between:
Cats or dogs – Both, I love animals!
Vanilla or chocolate – Vanilla and chocolate mixed together.
Winter or summer – Summer!
Digital drawing or pen and paper – Pen and paper.
Morning person or night owl – Night owl.
Colour or black and white – Black and white.
