Shaming.

  • Doina Tatu

This week the very talented Ariel Winter made the headlines for shutting down voices that were body shaming her. After posting the picture below people started saying she was “asking for it”. I wonder, what was she asking for?!

✌?️✌? #mynieces #lovethem #fbf

Why do some people feel the need to criticize everyone for everything they do? For all we know she was just trying to have a good time with her relatives, she was at the beach, of course she was wearing a swimming suit! Wouldn’t you?!

Her answer came soon after and yes, it asked for it! It asked for us to stand up and applaud!

“Who knew that an innocent photo with my nieces would turn into this? The height of a girl’s skirt or whatever she is wearing for that matter, does not imply what she is asking for. It sickens me to think at 17 years old, a photo of myself with my nieces is suggesting that I’m “asking for it”. I typically never give power to the mean things people bravely say behind their computer screens on the Internet, but this is for the girls who are constantly bullied whether it be online or at school. You are not asking for anything because of what you are wearing- you are expressing yourself and don’t you ever think you deserve the negativity as the consequence to what you are wearing- YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. Celebrate you and don’t let anyone’s comments allow you to think less of yourself. Us girls have to stick together!!!!!!”

The problem here is that some people don’t realize how they hurt others. I am all for speaking up, but speaking up when you see someone is doing you or someone else wrong. She was not hurting anyone with her picture, she was not empowering some outrageous behavior and she was in no way being vulgar.

If you people have so much time to waste (hence you have time to go around Instagram accounts and hurt people with your comments), go and do some volunteer work. You’ll see how gratified you will feel at the end of the day.

I am trying to reach out to all of you out there. There is so much evil happening in the world, life as it is hurts enough, don’t feed this evil. If you have something positive to say to someone – do it, if not – let it pass. Think before writing or speaking. would the words you want to send out help a person in some way? How would it feel if someone said it to you? Think about these things before you let your thoughts out into the world and realise once and for all that your words can affect others. Also don’t forget that sometimes

Great post. I think it’s important to bring these kinds of issues to light. So many do not hesitate to say horrible things over the internet but wouldn’t dare to speak them to someone’s face. I totally agree with you, there is so much evil out there & we need to learn to be kinder to each other.

Thank you, I am glad you feel the same way. If you wouldn’t have the guts to say it to someone’s face, then don’t do it hiding behind a screen. We should spread the love 🙂

Thanks! I agree with you, you can’t go shaming others unless you have some problems with your life that you aren’t dealing with.
