Kanye West vs Taylor Swift

Just when we thought that they kissed and made up after the VMAs incident, we got into round 2 of Kanye West vs Taylor Swift. While the self proclaimed genius never fails to amaze us with his behaviour, it is quite strange that he picked such a lovely person to take his rage out on. But again, we shouldn’t be surprised as Kanye’s rants include everything and everyone and most of the time the rapper seems like he’s just fighting with himself. In this unlikely duel there is no doubt about who comes out on the winning side. It’s clear we are team Taylor (or team common sense?) all the way, but we wanted to look back and try to understand what the hell happened between these two.

Round 1: It all started in 2009 at the VMAs when Kanye interrupted Taylor’s speech. While the 19 year old country star was accepting her award in the Best Female Video category for “You Belong With Me” video, West jumped on stage to express his opinion. “Yo, Taylor, I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!” Kanye expressed his discontent about Beyonce not getting that award for her “Single Ladies” video. He was booed and basically everyone was on T’s sides including the president of the United States himself that stated “He’s a jackass” while commenting on the incident. Safe to say Taylor was attacked but got out of it as a moral winner of the story, and Kanye became our favourite villain.

Round 2: Not to drag the story out, let’s just mention that Kanye used Twitter to apologise, even said he wrote a song for T, later claiming that his actions were not “arrogant” but “selfless.” Taylor addressed the controversy in her song “Innocent” and things were quite uneventful for a while. It seemed the hatchet was buried as Swift agreed to present Kanye with Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2015 VMAs. Taylor joked about the whole thing and West gave a heartfelt but slightly weird speech which maybe was a clue that for him it isn’t over (*play Adele Someone Like You here*).

Round 3: And here we are in 2016 in New York at rapper’s fashion show/album release party where the song “Famous” hit the speakers. Among many famous people attending Yeezy Season 3 were Swift’s friends like Gigi Hadid and Karlie Kloss that looked shocked as the lyrics said:”I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex/Why? I made that bitch famous/Goddamn, I made that bitch famous.” I feel like it’s rather pointless to try and understand what he was thinking while writing this, but I can’t say it is such a surprise coming from a guy whose ego is bigger than the universe. Kanye claimed that T approved the lyrics while her PR team stated: “Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single ‘Famous’ on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, ‘I made that bitch famous.'” While everyone was shaking their heads in disapproval Taylor was waiting for her moment to be heard and that finally happened at the Grammys where she gave a speech talking about life and people trying to take credit for your accomplishments. Click play and listen to the whole thing.

Do we even need to state that we are so over Kanye and his moves?! We hope he gets his act together and focuses on his creativity instead of acting like a mean spoiled drama queen. #TeamTaylor #PrayForKanye

Go Taylor! She seems like such a down-to-Earth person, and her acceptance speech was very eloquent.
