Thursday Travels – Sirmione

  • Doina Tatu
  • 14 April 2016

As I was telling you a few weeks ago, I enjoy traveling, even if it’s just about a few hours away from home. Escaping the normal scenery makes me relax and takes away a bit of the day to day routines. The last time we escaped, me and my boyfriends visited Livigno, a beautiful town in the mountains. This time we went for water, not sea water, but lake water, and our city of choice was Sirmione.

Located in Brescia, Sirmione is an amazing city on the lake of Garda, a city with a big history (you can find out about it here) and for its dimensions (it’s quite small) has quite a few sights.

The main sight that strikes you as you are entering into town, is the Scaliger castle that’s surrounded by this clear turquoise water. It was built by the end of the 12th century and its purpose was to protect Verona along with the other fortifications.

Another important sight is the Grotto of Catullus. I didn’t manage to visit it yet, but I hope to do it next time. They say it’s not really a grotto, but I guess it is worth seeing (every italian that I told I visited Sirmione asked me if I saw the grotto).

The last, but not least thing that I want to mention are the hot springs that is a must do! As you might know the hot springs are rich in minerals and are used in health treatments. If that doesn’t convince you, think about staying in warm water and looking at the beautiful scenery around you. Oh, the joy!

The only thing that probably is not amazing in Sirmione are the prices. It is quite an expensive city, but it’s worth seeing nevertheless.
