Our talk with the creative team behind Doodle Deux

  • Ivona Josipovic
  • 21 November 2016

They are Andreas and Felicia, a couple from Jakarta that works in advertising. They started Doodle Deux, an Instagram account, where they capture their adventures in a very creative way.

Instead of sharing selfies, this couple captures their favourite moments and memories through photographing doodles of them (hence the name). These fun drawings interact with the surroundings and are very fun and cool. We are happy to share our talk with this creative duo, explaining how it all started and much more.

Doodle Deux

Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

Greetings from Jakarta! Our names are Andreas & Felicia. We’re the people behind Doodle Deux.

How did you first start your Doodledeux project?

We were just having our regular date over a cup of coffee. Andreas had some work that needed to be finished. So, while waiting for him to finish, I took a piece of paper and started doodling our caricature. Then I cut it out and took a picture of the doodle interacting with the cup of coffee on the table, just for fun. It turned out so cute! Then the idea popped up – What if we document our journey as a couple using this kind of doodle?! At first, Andreas was not very enthusiastic about the idea. But few doodles after, he finally got interested and supported the idea by becoming the photographer and final artwork guy, retouching the photos before I (Felicia) would post them.

Doodle Deux

Did you ever imagine that it would attract so much attention?

Not really. At first we were just inviting our friends to follow. But after Bored Panda shared our story, we gained more attention and followers with positive response. This made us excited to keep doing our work.

Is this project your job or hobby now?

It’s still a hobby. We still need our daily jobs to pay the bills and the planned trip. But we’d love to continue doing the doodles and share happiness seeing the positive response it gets.

Were you always creative and interested in drawing?

Working in advertising agency requires us to be creative. But yes, I was personally always interested in doodling and Andreas in photography. Hence our roles for the project. 😉

Doodle Deux

What is one dream location from anywhere in the world where you’d like to capture your drawing?

Just one? We would love to travel the world if given the chance! Haha. But if we need to give one dream location, it would be Cappadocia, Turkey for Neng and Iceland for Abang.

Any accounts on social media that you especially enjoy seeing and would recommend to others?

When we just started @doodledeux, we stumbled upon @paperboyo amazing account, a similar photography using paper cuts out, but using black paper to create a silhouette effect. And who doesn’t love @jean_jullien works! Very creative and funny!

Doodle Deux

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I was inspired to have a personal project with my boyfriend when I first saw Murad Osmann’s (@muradosmann) #followmeto series. Back then after I saw the pictures, I jumped in excitement to ask my boyfriend to create something together, but still couldn’t find the right idea. I also love Phillipa Rice’s Soppy, as she beautifully portrayed her daily life with her boyfriend in form of a comic. I think these two works are where our inspiration came from, although the idea came by accident.

If you could have any super-power what would it be and why?

Well, of course the power to make us able to move from one place to another so we can travel the world and do more interesting doodles! So, teleportation or the super-power to fly maybe.

Doodle Deux

Any advice to other creatives out there who are interested in starting their projects?

Though it sounds like cliché, inspiration can come from anywhere. You just need to be open-minded and sensitive enough to catch and connect the dots to start something. And when you’ve found whatever it is you want to do, just start and stay committed. The results may not come in an instance, but you gotta keep doing good work and find a way to let the world discover your work.
