Drawing with Veselko Njegus

Give him a paper and a pen and it’s amazing what he can do. Today we are drawing with Veselko Njegus, or better said, we leave all the drawing to him while we talk about his art and what inspires him.

Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Veselko Njeguš, I was born in Foča, Bosnia and Herzegovina. I still live in my home town and I am a football player. I also enjoy drawing in my free time.

How did you first get into drawing?

Well, I think I created my first drawings as quickly as I was able to keep a pen in my hand. I would draw on everything, any paper, books and later on even school desks.

Favourite subjects/things to draw?

I mostly enjoy portraits. As a kid, I used to draw cartoon characters, and that kind of evolved into drawing real people, friends and celebrities.

What techniques do you use the most and why?

I mostly use graffiti pencils and do black and white pieces. I was always best with this technique so I just decided to stick with it and get even better. Sometimes I use colours but that happens quite rarely.

What inspires you?

A little bit of everything. We live in the internet era where everything is just a click away. I must say that it would be hard not to find inspiration when all you have to do is to open your laptop. I am also inspired by other artists, their work and dedication.

What is art for you?

Art doesn’t really need a definition. It is different for everyone, but somehow still the same. Art is everything. An American painter said: “Filling a space in a beautiful way. That’s what art means to me.” (Georgia O’Keeffe in Art News December 1977)

Who are your favourite artists and why?

I used to admire the Renaissance masters the most, but now I enjoy people using the same technique as me. They inspire me to get better and are easier to relate to than Da Vinci. I want to mention Aleksandar Ilić, an artist from Serbia that is known around the world. Marko Barišić is very talented as well. There’s also Dino Tomić, Ileana Hunter and Eirini Kis from Greece that is a tattoo master.

If you could have anyone in the world (dead or alive) pose for you who would you choose and why?

I would have to choose some beautiful and strong female from the past, maybe Helen of Troy or Cleopatra. Do I really need to explain why? (laughs)

Favorite book, band, song, movie of the moment?

My favorite book that made me fall in love with reading is White Fang by Jack London. From what I’ve been reading recently I recommend Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. My favourite song right now is Writings On The Wall by Sam Smith. I don’t have a favourite movie, but I’m looking forward to see The Revenant with Leonardo de Caprio and Tom Gardy. I think it’ll be a good one.

If you could have any superpower what would it be?

I always wanted to fly ever since I was a kid, so let’s say being able to fly. Even Spiderman kind of thing would be fine (laughing…).
