Lyn Slater, the Accidental Icon

Lyn Slater is a modern age style Cinderella behind the Accidental Icon that was discovered by chance in New York City.

Lyn Slater was photographed at the streets of New York during fashion week. The photographers mistook her for someone else and started taking her pictures. She never dreamt that on that day she would become a (famous) style icon.

“I was surrounded by fashion photographers taking my picture, thinking I was some fashion person,” she told the Huffington Post. “It was really all very accidental.”

Lyn is a university professor that has a soft spot for Japanese design and “special, carefully edited and curated collections”. On the day that fate smiled at her she was on her way to meet with a friend. She recalls the event for iD Magazine:”I was waiting outside the Lincoln Center for a friend, dressed in a Yohji Yamamoto suit and carrying a Chanel bag. Within seconds I was surrounded by a swarm of street style photographers and fashion journalists, all clamouring to find out who I was.”

She decided to ride the wave and has started her blog and Instagram page appropriately named Accidental Icon, back in 2014.

“I started Accidental Icon because I was having trouble finding a fashion blog or magazine that offered an urban, modern, intellectual aesthetic but also spoke to women who live what I call “interesting but ordinary lives in cities..”

Loyal followers and readers worldwide started following her work. Lyn is nowadays part of Elite Models that are her representatives. She stars in Mango campaign and graces pages of Vogue. Still combining her love of fashion with her university professor career Lyn is one busy bee. She describes her life as ordinary, but interesting, and her dressing as honest and according to who she is.

Her style is original, but not eccentric. Her outfits are demolishing stereotypes of what women in their 60s should look like. They tell a story of a strong woman. A woman who is expressive and not afraid to balance on the edge of the rebellious side. We applaud and admire Lyn and can’t wait to see what future brings for this Accidental Icon.
